When I first got into packaging and heard things like 28-410, 38-400, and 53-485, I honestly thought somebody was reading lottery numbers or giving me the combination to a safe.

Turns out these little numbers are incredibly important.

What Do The Numbers Actually Mean?

Let’s take 38-400.

The 38 tells you the diameter of the bottle opening.

The 400 tells you the thread style.

Think of it like buying shoes.

The size matters.

But so does the shape.

A size 11 cowboy boot and a size 11 basketball shoe are both size 11… but they’re definitely not interchangeable.

Caps work the same way.

Why Does This Matter?

Because nothing is more frustrating than ordering 50,000 caps and finding out they don’t fit your bottles.

And yes…

That happens more often than you’d think.

The cap may look right.

The diameter may match.

But if the thread finish is wrong, it’s simply not going to work.

28-410
Probably one of the most common finishes out there. Think shampoo bottles, lotions, soap dispensers, and trigger sprayers.

38-400
A workhorse finish. Common in supplements, chemicals, powders, and industrial products.

53-400
Usually found on larger, wide-mouth containers where easy access matters.

63-485
A very popular size for food products, sauces, powders, and industrial packaging.

Neck finishes are one of those things nobody thinks about…

Until the caps don’t fit.

Then suddenly everybody becomes very interested in thread profiles.
