What Is a UN-Rated Bottle, Really?

A UN-rated bottle is a container that has been tested and certified to United Nations performance standards for transporting dangerous goods. These standards were created so countries weren’t all playing by different rules when shipping hazardous materials.
In plain English:
UN-rated bottles are battle-tested containers that have proven they can hold up to the abuse of real-world shipping without leaking, bursting, cracking, or giving your safety manager a heart attack.
Typical products that end up in UN-rated bottles:
- Acidic Compounds
- Industrial Chemicals
- Oils and Lubricants
- Agricultural Chemicals

How Do Bottles Earn a UN Rating? (The Not-So-Glamorous Test List)
To get that little “UN” mark and code, a packaging design has to pass a set of performance tests meant to mimic what happens during normal transport and handling.
Some of the big ones:
- Drop Test
The bottle is dropped from a specified height in different positions to show it can take a hit without failing. - Pressure Test
For liquid containers, internal pressure is applied while the container is checked for leaks and sometimes even submerged in water while under pressure. - Stacking Test
The packaging is subjected to a load simulating pallets stacked on top of each other for a set period, to make sure the bottom layers don’t crush or deform in a way that compromises safety.
Depending on the package type and hazard class, there can also be vibration and puncture tests, but the idea is the same:
If it can’t survive the journey, it doesn’t get the UN stamp.
Once the design passes, it’s given a UN code that string of letters and numbers you see embossed or printed on the container or outer packaging. That code tells regulators and shippers exactly what performance level that package is certified for.
When Do You Actually Need a UN-Rated Bottle?
